Santorini’s landscape might have sprung from a Fantasy author’s mind! According to Wikipedia, the present state of the Santorini archipelago was the result of one of the largest volcanic eruptions on Earth in the last few thousand years with an estimated 7 on the VEI (volcanic explosivity index). It all happened ca. 1500 BC. Some say this was the location of mythical Atlantis which was destroyed in the aftermath of the eruption. This video features Santorini’s municipality of Thira and Imerovigli, both dramatically clinging to the old volcano’s caldera (flank). When in Thira, don’t miss the exhibit on relics from the ancient town of Akrotiri, samples can be seen in my video. Enjoy!
