In the night of 23.January 1973 a tree kilometer long fissure opend on Heimaey island, witch belongs to the Vestmannaeyjar islands (Icland). The eruption not only caused evacuation of the island, it also destroyed almost the whole town of Heimaey. The to volcano filmmakers Hermann Luschner and Gerhard Skrobek succeeded to visit the island for some days during the first week of the eruption. This is part of their (digitaliced) super8 material, that was broadcasted in news and documantaions all over the world.

This was probably a shocking event for the Westmann Island in 1973 but the island itself formed off the South coast of Iceland only came into existence because of volcanic activity. Those who live there today must know that they live in the shadow of a fissure volcano.
