Did Life Exist On Mars?

Did Life Exist on Mars?

The debate rages on: Is there the possibility of the existence of life on Mars? The recent discovery of water in the polar ice caps would lend at least some hope to the probability of life on Mars. The rovers Spirit and Opportunity’s discovery of hematite lends further evidence of at least the existence of water, as hematite only forms in water. There have been a few discoveries of evidence of water on Mars, and water, of course, is the basic necessity for most all life to exist.. Hence, the probability exist that at least some form of microbial life does call the planet Mars home, but perhaps a better question to ask would be: “Was there life on Mars at some time in the distant past?”

A closer look at the bold features of Mars will give startling insight into the history of the Red Planet. First of all, Mars has at least 3 volcanoes that dwarf Earth’s Mt. Everest. Though these volcanoes are long extinct, they still remain a ‘smoking gun’ look into Mars’ past. Olympus Mons, thought to be the largest volcano in the Solar System, rises a whopping 15 miles above the planet’s surface. This volcano stretches beyond the limits of Mars’ atmosphere and reaches into space. Apply a little geological science as to the formation of volcanoes, and imagine how long it would take to form a volcano of this magnitude. How long would Olympus Mons and the other volcanoes have to erupt to become as large as they are? Now consider the fact that Mars has no molten core. If a series of volcanoes were to erupt to the point they form those of the size found on Mars, a planet’s molten core would eventually become depleted and the planet would basically turn itself inside out. The fact that the chief soil content on Mars is iron oxide (hence the color and name “Red Planet”) gives evidence to this possibility, as most planets’ molten cores consist of iron. Such a series of eruptions would surely devastate any planet and any life existing would become buried under miles of ash, dirt, and iron deposits.

Consider also the vast mountain and valley formations found on Mars. As the eruptions subsided, the planet would begin to cool and contract, contorting the land into great valleys such as Valles Marinaris and the other bold features found on Mars. The planet’s tectonic plate system would most likely have remained intact, so any features such as flood plains, ocean beds, lakes and river beds would have remained intact as well. After, say, a billion years of erosions from winds and dust storms, these features would emerge from their blanket of dirt and once again become evident.

Combine all of these facts, along with the fact that the atmosphere of Mars consists mainly of carbon dioxide, and it all lends to at least the possibility of a volcanic cataclysm on Mars. What kind of life could have existed before such an event? Would it have been Earth-like and resemble what we know today? Would it have been more like James Cameron’s Pandora (Avatar, c2010)? We may never know, but more advanced probes sent to Mars could reveal some startling clues into the Red Planet’s past. Did life exist on Mars? The thought gives us a feast for the imagination.

A Terrible Disaster in Indonesia

Posted: Nov 01, 2010 |Comments: 0

]]>

On October 31, 2010, there was a terrible disaster happened in Indonesia. Mount Merapi spews smoke, when off the slopes of the country’s most volatile volcano on Saturday, Indonesia’s military forced villagers carried some away screaming as the mountain sent clouds of gray ash cascading down its slopes in its most powerful explosion yet.

Surono, chief of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation , announced that Mount Merapi sprang back to life early this week and unleashed a terrifying 21-minute eruption early Saturday, followed by more than 350 volcanic tremors and 33 ash burst. The notoriously unpredictable Mount Merapi forced the temporarily closure of an airport and claimed another life, bringing the total death toll nears 430.

When getting this terrible news from my laptop (http://www.dinodirect.com/laptops/ ), immediately I have fallen into a bad mood. It is so hard for a life to come into the world, being a healthy human, making some contributions to his country and realize his values. Life is such a hard thing, everything you owned in your life should be treasured with your whole heart. Unfortunately there are some natural disasters in the world, sometimes just one natural disaster will bring some many lives away and making all your efforts in vain.

]]>

Actually the thing erupted from volcano is not something called “fire”, it is some high-temperature viscous material called magma. The situation for a volcano eruption is very speculated, at other times, the magma has been wrapped in the Earth’s crust tightly, due to its high temperature and great pressure from the Earth’s crust, therefore when meeting the place where a thin crust or crack, the magma will blow out of the ground heavily and violently.

When a volcano erupted, there will be huge earth-shattering roar together, as well as roaring and rolling stones. The extremely hot magma is just like one and one ferocious dragons, emerging out from the ground and devouring everything around him. Just in one minute, radius of tens of miles will be enveloped with a heavy smoke and fog. Sometimes, due to the volcanic eruption, there will appear a high mountain from the ground just in one minute such as the Mount Kilimanjaro near the equator and; while sometimes the volcano will swallow up the entire village and town just one instant.

The formation of the volcano is under the cover of the earth, the deeper under the surface, the more higher the temperature is. And about 20 miles under the surface, the high temperature is enough to melt down most rocks. When rocks melting down, it will be expanded and needs more space. Such melted material of high temperature will be upright along the crack caused by bulge. When the pressure of the grooved lava is bigger than that of its upper rocks, the material magma will blow out and form a volcano.

After evaluation of thousands of years, the Earth has come into like the situation today, what’s more, human being is the best creature ever and they have created such great values in the world, with huge contribution. While the place we live is just a common planet, owning its advantages and disadvantages, she owns so many valued resources which cannot be compared by other planets. But there are many natural disasters in the world, such as volcano, earthquake, floods etc. Sometimes there is just little we can do for natural disasters, while developing modern technology, inevitably there will be some harm to environment which needs to be taken good care of by human. Probably through such method, there will be less harm and disasters will be reduced objectively.

The Earthquake Strikes Washington Dc

It was an afternoon rumble that many Californians might have laughed off as the stuff of high-strung East Coasters. But millions of Americans from Georgia to Canada were jolted Tuesday by the most powerful earthquake to hit the region in decades. The region’s geology and shallow depth of the quake amplified its widespread impact. The Earth’s crust under the East Coast is colder and firmer than the West Coast, which allows shocks to travel more efficiently.

A Hairy Issue For Humans

The amount of your hair from the neck up is different from your hair (what little there is of it) from the neck down. There are sexual differences with respect to hair between the human male and female as well both from the neck up and from the neck down. The curious part is that neither neck up or neck down or sexual differences tend to have close parallels with nearly all the rest of the terrestrial mammalian kingdom, mammals we presumably naturally evolved from.                                                Indonesia:Disaster Come again

Another disaster comes to the Indonesian again after the tsunami. It is volcano. Many people become homeless during this fatal disaster. Villagers ride their motorcycles as the volcano spews smoke as seen from the village.

Indonesia’s Mount Merapi erupted again on Saturday morning and promoted authorities to extend the danger about two kilometers. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that 38 people have been killed and 69,533 evacuated since Merapi began erupting last week, while Indonesia’s vulcanology agency warned that flights around Yogyakarta may be disrupted. Scientists have monitored that there is an increased activity at other two volcanoes. The Indonesian’s disaster officials are struggling to deliver aid to the remote areas last week.

Rescue and recover were still in the works. The European Commission has claimed that they will offer about 2.1 million dollars to the victims of the volcano and tsunami in Indonesia.

Indonesia is a country in Southeast Asia. It is the word’s fourth most populous country which is a republic with an elected lei gesture and president. The Javanese is the largest population in that country. Although the country has a large population, Indonesia has vast areas of wilderness. The country is rich in natural resources, yet poverty still remains widespread. The condition of economy of this country is not as boom as other developing countries. Therefore, this time the volcano and tsunami have made a fatal to Indonesia.

The tsunami killed 431 people and another 88 are still missing, the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said. President Obama said that his wife Michel and he felt deeply mourned for Western Indonesian because of the recent volcano and tsunami. Obama also said “meanwhile, Indonesia’s rapid adaptive capacity and the Indonesian government to recover quickly rescue encouraged me”, “as Indonesia’s friends, the United States is ready to offer any type of aid.

The casualties are heavy and the dead were severely scorched by the hot volcano, and it is difficult to identify the dead. As one member of our country, we are also one of the friends of Indonesia. So we also need to dedicate our love to them. Different people are using their own kind of ways to express their help for Indonesian. It is reported that a squadron of volunteers, the relief workers and soldiers composed of rescuers are collecting the hundreds of livestock bodies burned in the volcano, seeing Mount Merapi pass again ejective substance, such as volcanic smoke, so they immediately stopped collection work.

This disaster shocked not only the Indonesian themselves, but also all the other people in the world. Everyone is doing their own hands to help the Indonesian .It is reported that an online store www.dinodirect.com has organized a team of volunteers to offer some help for the Indonesian which action should be advocated by all of us.

Bromo – Ijen Tour

]]>

If you decide to make traveling over Indonesia do not ever forget to stop by Mount Bromo, the mother of active volcano in East-Java, Indonesia.
Bromo Caldera is the youngest caldera from well-known Tengger Caldera a volcanic massif extending from Semeru volcano with 16 km width. The massive Tengger volcanic complex dates back to about 820,000 years ago and consists of five overlapping stratovolcanoes, each truncated by a caldera. The volcano has summit elevation 2329 meter, latitude: 7.942°S and Longitude: 112.95°E 112°57′0″E last eruption was on 2007.

An overlapping cluster of post-caldera cones was constructed on the floor of the Sandsea caldera within the past several thousand years. The youngest of these is Bromo, one of Java’s most active and most frequently visited volcanoes. Bromo is the most favourite and most visited by the tourists.

Cold, those things are the first you will be feel when you get-off from the car and step-down your foot print in the land of Bromo. The temperature around 10oC – 0oC, the lowest temperature usually held in the morning just before sun rise. That is why we suggest you to prepare warm cloth, glove and wear cotton trouser before heading to Mt. Bromo.

The visitor usually starting their tour in the very early morning at 03.30 AM, the first destination of their trip is to witness the sunrise from the peak of Mount Penanjakan 2774 above sea level, as this mountain is the highest mountain in surrounding area. To reach this mountain you should pass the sand of sea (looks like desert) planted with dry bush every where combining with the flying sand every which way blow by the that is potentially make the visitor hard to breath and easily get lost especially in the darkness.

There will be narrow path and curve ascend road en rout to Penanjakan mountain and of course you should have sufficient driving skills to devote it. To avoid un-expect thing happens, usually visitors use the jeep4×4WD to reach Penanjakan mountain that is driving by local people who know this area intimately. They are very nice to the visitor and very hospitality makes you feel like at home.

The sunrise will take place at around 05.20 – 05.40 AM depend on season, the best time to see the sunrise would be around at May – September (no rainfall within that month).

After sunrise usually people then moves back down to sand of sea to explore bromo crater. There will be an option to get the crater, first you can do it by easy walk or if you wish to try how to feel in horseback then you can ride it with only USD 7-9 go and fro start from the jeep parking place and it takes 15-20 minutes on horseback to get to stairways of Mount Bromo, then you should step up the stairways till reach the rim of the crater (1.392 above sea level). There are 250 stairways from the first step till the last steps, but sometimes people have different number in counted of the stairways (I was found there were 248 stairways, but my mate have calculated 246), looks so strange but its real.

Beside Mount Bromo, East Java has also amazing place to go. That is Kawah Ijen (Ijen Lake). The Ijen volcano is located in the east of Java province of a group of small stratovolcanoes constructed within the large 20-km-wide Ijen (Kendeng) caldera. The last eruption was on 1999The north caldera wall forms a prominent arcuate ridge, but elsewhere the caldera rim is buried by post-caldera volcanoes, including Gunung Merapi stratovolcano, which forms the 2799 m high point of the Ijen complex. Immediately west of Gunung Merapi is the renowned historically active Kawah Ijen volcano, which contains a nearly 1-km-wide, turquoise-colored, acid crater lake.

Summit Elevation: 2799 m 9,183 feet Latitude: 8.058?S 8?3′30″S Longitude: 114.242?E 114?14′30″E

Picturesque Kawah Ijen is the world’s largest highly acidic lake and is the site of a labor-intensive sulfur mining operation in which sulfur-laden baskets are hand-carried from the crater floor. Many other post-caldera cones and craters are located within the caldera or along its rim. The largest concentration of post-caldera cones forms an E-W-trending zone across the southern side of the caldera.

Coffee plantations cover much of the Ijen caldera floor, and tourists are drawn to its waterfalls, hot springs, and dramatic volcanic scenery.

You may be needed at least 3 days journey to grab all the beautiful things of both Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Bellow arrangement will showed how the itineraries going;

From Bromo to Ijen

This package is the most favorite tour for visitors who wish to make their trip in very short. The pretty of sun rise and the beautiful landscape of sea-sand along with live picture of the whole shape of mt. Semeru vision from the highest spot of Penanjakan 2774 asl. So, prepare yourself to have unforgettable experience that never imagine before.

Bromo, en routing to rural settlement and hilly road with green coloring of paddy field along the way will make your eyes fresh. The water has cascades from the dense forest above. The primary attraction is natural environment that is encircled by 7 waterfalls and caves. Day 2 >> Bromo – Ijen
Wake up at very early morning, making short preparation for Sun Rise tour, and then the private jeep 4×4WD will drive you up to Penanjakan Mountain 2774 asl as the highest place to the Sun Rise and amazing view of mountain range. It will grab you in to the different atmosphere and unforgettable moment that you never imagine before. After that, proceeding drive back to Bromo crater to witness the crater from closed. Back to the hotel for breakfast, short back packing and heading to Ijen volcano in Bondowoso. Around 5 hours drive en routing flat and hilly curves road, stop for picture taking would be an option subject to your interest. Check-in the Ijen Resort hotel and stay overnight.

Day 3 >> Ijen – Surabaya / Ferry Terminal Banyuwangi
Early in the morning, well before sunrise, we drive a short way to the start of the trail that leads up to the active, beautiful crater of Kawah Ijen volcano (about 1 hr climbing) with its famous blue acid lake (the most acidic in the world!) and the hot, partly liquid sulphur deposits.
The fumaroles are so hot that sulphur comes out as green vapour. The vapour is collected by large pipes, through which the vapor condenses, and at the exit you see red rivulets of liquid sulphur, which then freeze to solid deposits.  These deposits are quarried, in order to obtain huge blocks of pure sulphur. Ijen’s sulphur deposits are infamous for the local workers who quarry the sulphur with primitive, health-devastating methods,- an incredibly difficult job.
Gas-masks are provided for your visit to the crater. After plenty of exploration time, we leave the Ijen Plateau transfer to Surabaya airport or other destinations.

Finally, I wish have a nice journey and safe trip.

See you in Bromo..

Mount Kilauea: Burning With the Fire of Hawaiian Mythology

]]>

The Big Island is home to several areas of volcanic activity, including one of the world’s most active volcanoes: Mount Kilauea. This astounding location has a long history of erupting, and an even longer history within Hawaiian folklore. In fact, native Hawaiians might lead you to believe that the characters of this folklore are the very same forces that drive such scorching activity both to this day and in centuries long since past.

Kilauea has been in a state of constant activity for hundreds of years, but violent eruptions are far and few between. The earliest eruption on written record was said to occur back in 1820. Even before notes of the eruptions were transcribed, the volcano had a history of reigning fire. Sometime in 1790, Kilauea is said to have erupted forcefully, killing a group of Hawaiian warriors and their families. These same warriors were reportedly followers of Keōua Kuahuula, who was the last chief on the Big Island to hold out against Kamehameha the 1st’s unification of the island of Hawaii, on his way to conquering all of the Hawaiian Islands.

Another noteworthy early nineteenth century individual associated with this impressive volcano is Admiral Lord Byron. Byron, who was the cousin of the famous poet of the same name, (minus the “Admiral”) spent some time at Kilauea, camping at a coordinates that can still be found today known as Byron’s Ledge. We might assume that this more recent lord felt similar to his elder cousin, retreating to the slopes of Kilauea because he “love[s] not man the less, but Nature more.”

One reason to reconsider that love of nature when it comes to volcanoes happened in the early twentieth century. One of Kilauea’s most powerful eruptions occurred during this era after water that had accumulated in the Halema’uma’u Crater drained into the volcano below. The ensuing clash of magma and water created an enormous explosion that was said to have cast volcanic ash, steam, and fiery rock projectiles as far as twelve miles into the Hawaiian sky. This amazing display of Mother Nature’s power occurred in 1924, and is surely reminiscent of similar events that precede recorded Hawaiian history. When one considers this fact, it’s easy to understand why the Hawaiian people held this –and the other big island volcanoes– with such high respect. Having seen mother-nature’s fury first hand, their natural reaction was to attribute it to their gods, namely Pele, who has a long fiery history of activity throughout the islands.

Pele, or the Hawaiian Volcano Goddess, was said to have been manifested in Kilauea. The volcano was thought to represent the actual body of this important Hawaiian deity. Certain lava formations even became associated with Pele’s physical attributes. Spatters of lava as they travel through the air take on a tear drop shape and sometimes harden before returning to land, retaining their form and becoming what are known as “Pele’s Tears.” When lava drips over itself, or spurts quickly through the air when it enters water, hair-like strands of volcanic glass are created, that you might be able to guess are referred to in Hawaii as “Pele’s Hair.” Pele’s legacy survives to this day in the form of these eruption products and photos of lava that sometimes seem to show Pele’s likeness within the blazing lava itself.

Another physical sign of Pele and other Hawaiian gods’ actions are viewable at the previously mentioned Halemaʻumaʻu crater at Mount Kilauea. The Hawaiian rain god Kamapua’a, jealous of Pele’s amazing ability to demonstrate her power by causing fire to erupt forth from the ground, caused ‘ama ‘uma ‘u or a specific type of Hawaiian fern (which the Halemaʻumaʻu is named for), to cover the sides of the mountain. Choked by the smoke that was now trapped by the covering of lush foliage, Pele was forced to emerge from below ground and expose herself to her rival. The two powerful deities immediately realized that an all out battle between the two of them would certainly result in their mutual destruction. The two wisely reached a truce, splitting the Big Island between each other with Pele retaining control of the leeward side of the island, and Kamapua’a gaining total control of the windward side. To this day, the geography of the big island is strikingly contrasting, perhaps lending a bit of validity to this imaginative bit of Hawaiian legend.

The Big Island of Hawaii is truly a one of a kind location that any visitor to the Hawaiian Islands should take some time to explore. Mount Kiluea in particular is frequently the highlight of many a vacation experience. Tours of the volcano area are a great way to get a chance to see Pele in all of her magnificence. Seeing these amazing spectacles of fire and rock will surely leave you wondering exactly what else besides a supernatural force could inspire such a constant flow.

Its east rift zone started erupting January 3rd 1983, and is still active today. Its presence is still strong having devastating two homes just last year in Kalapana Gardens. In 1990, Mt. Kilauea did its worst damage by destroying 104 homes in the same area. My heart goes out to the residents of Kalapana that still live in the area.

Mt. Kilauea is made up of a series of active vents and various lava streams that flow all the way to the ocean. Some of the streams are underground in lava tubes, and can only be seen where it meets the ocean. The initial eruption in 1983 was at the Pu’u'o’o vent, sending lava over 200ft in the air. In 1986, the Kupaianaha vent made lava tubes flowing to the ocean and destroyed 14 homes in Royal Gardens starting the destruction of Kalapana. In 1990 Mt. Kilauea did its worst damaged to the town by literally burying churches, homes and stores in the ancient Hawaiian village. Kalapana was once known for it’s magnificent black sand beaches and treasured historical sites, most of which has now been consumed by lava. Still living without electricity and water, some residents steadfastly believe they were spared by Pele, the god of fire, while others believe it was just plain luck. Either way the devastation continues as just last year two more homes were destroyed. According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, Mt. Kilauea will remain active in perpetuity. That makes Big Island one of the most unique places in the world. It’s land mass is literally still growing, and has one of the longest lasting active volcanoes in the world.

This January also marks the 2nd annual “Volcano Awareness Month” on the Big Island. Hiking, group discussions, teacher workshops, and various other programs will be conducted all month to better understand and respect volcanoes. A great way to get involved is to see for yourself! Discover Hawaii Tours offers an exciting Big Island Volcano tour from any island which highlights includes the Volcanoes National park, Thurston Lava Tube, and Kalapana Lava Flows. Stopping at the Kilauea Iki Crater overlook in the volcanoes nation park I felt the coldest ever felt in Hawaii at such high altitudes. Baring the weather conditions was worth it to witness a massive dried up lake of lava and pictures of when it was still hot in 1960. To see Mt. Kilauea in action, check out the Kalapana Lava Flow where the lava meets the ocean. As the sun was starting to set I could see the magnificent lava start to glow.

Poas Volcano is just an easy 20 mile drive from SJO airport and downtown Alajuela and 30 miles from San Jose. It is the ideal location for starting a Costa Rican vacation away from the bustle of the cities and congested roads.

Poas Volcano National Park is the most visited national park in Costa Rica since it is so well positioned for tourists and locals alike. Poas Volcano area makes the perfect first or last night stop on a Costa Rican vacation itinerary.

Poas Volcano has alot to offer tourists looking to see a different side of Costa Rica. Costa Rica is a country of contrasts and nowehere is that more visible when taking a drive up the slopes of Poas. Within metres the landscape changes and varies from lush and tropical to cool and alpine.

Poas is sparsely populated and so it is best to arrange accommodation ahead of time to ensure you get a good room in a reputable hotel or lodge. Many little roadside places offer rooms at a low rate, but do not expect much in terms of comfort.

Poas lodge near the summit of Poas Volcano is the closest lodge to the entrance of Poas Volcano National Park and has the most to offer in terms of comfort and value for money.

Poas Lodge is just 3 miles from the entrance to Poas Volcano National Park and staying here allows you to be the first at the park without having to get up at 6am.

It is best to visit Poas Volcano’s main crater early in the morning since it often clouds over later in the day. Poas Lodge serves breakfast from 7am, allowing you to sip a cup of delicious Costa Rican coffee and enjoy the central valley views, before heading up to the park at 8am when it opens.

Poas Lodge recently installed energy effecient heaters in the guest rooms to compliment the already cozy quarters. Free wi-fi in the rooms adds to the value and the on site restaurant makes delicious fare and offers a wide variety.

Before heading up to Poas Volcano area be sure to make a reservation, rooms in the area are limited and clean, comfortabke rooms even more so.

Poas Lodge is a firm favorite and comes highly recommended on sites like Trip Advisor. Recently the lodge has installed heating in all the guest rooms as well as making wi-fi available to all guests at no charge.

Poas Volcano’s main crater is an amaziing site and should not be missed, it is not too often you can stand on the edge of an active volcanic crater after a good nights sleep.

Napoleon Hits His Waterloo, Super Tambora Causes The Year Without A Summer

Worldwide Weather Patterns and Devastating Effects

1816 – The Year That Tambora (1815) Was Felt Around the World

There are several reasons the “Year Without A Summer” occurred. We were having the “Dalton Minimum” – a period of low sun spot activity causing cold in general and there were four other volcanoes which preceded the Tambora one.

To sum it up: The Tambora was the largest eruption in recorded history. It blew its top on April 10, 1815. While the April 10 eruption was catastrophic, historical records and geological analysis of eruption deposits indicate that the volcano had been active between 1812 and 1815. With all of the other effects of the multiple volcanic outbursts, enough ash was put into the atmosphere to cause global cooling. This caused, in 1816 — the “Year Without A Summer.”

In May of 1816, the cold weather jumped on the young plants in the northeast and killed the crops that had been planted. June 4 was the big dramatic day; frosts were reported in Connecticut and New England. A cold front had a hold on the entire area. On June 6, snow fell in upper state New York and Maine. Farther north in Quebec City, a foot of snow fell and finished off most of their crops. The malnutrition, starvation and epidemic that followed caused what people call a “famine”. This weather pattern played out very dramatically in the northern climes, and powerfully impacted the American and European economies and population health.

Not Only Tambora, But Four Other Volcanoes From 1812 to 1814

The big Tambora volcano on the Island of Sumbawa, of the Dutch East Indies, was one dramatic “blow” with an explosivity index of 7. But what probably directly contributed, along with the Dalton Minimum, were the more minor Tambora volcanoes between 1812 and 1814 and 4 other earthquakes with explosivity indexes of 4 in the below.

In the Caribbean, in 1812, on the Island of Soufriere there was a volcano. Indonesia experienced a volcano on the Sanghihe Islands in 1812. The Ryukyu Islands in Japan experienced one in 1813, and then the Phillippines on Mayon in 1814. These were not as immense as Tambora, but they were not lightweights either. There was much accumulated ash by the time Tambora blew.

American Western Expansion Commences – Joseph Smith’s Family Leaves Vermont

The crop failures of the “Year Without A Summer” forced the family of Joseph Smith to move from Sharon, Vermont to Palmyra, New York. In western New York, the entire history of the birth of the Mormon Church began when factors combined to have Joseph experience his visions. From western New York, the Mormons then began a series of migrations that took them to the mid west, and then because of persecution and social unrest brought upon the Mormons, they finally fled to Utah, in a kind of Exodus to a “promised land”, under the leadership of Brigham Young, a man whose family also came from the western New York area.

Western New York became an important destination from New England because of this weather. People decided to pick up and move since they were contemplating moving west anyway. The cold weather combined with a sense of “population explosion” or “feeling crowded”, if you can believe it, moved upon the settlers and farmers in New England. 15 years later, in the 1830’s, with many New Englanders already having left their original homes, because of the volcano, there began the biggest migration not caused by a war, in all of history.

The area of the mid west was absolutely wide open and there for the settling. Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota all began to be settled by this “puritan” population which was originally from the New England area. The name “puritan” as a sociological ethnic designation (not necessarily religious, per se, they were now Protestant, Episcopalian and other groups) began during this time when they seemed to head en masse toward western climes. Ultimately the entire northern tier of the west, all the way to Seattle, was settled by this same peaceful migration of New England “puritans”.

Europe is Frigid

Europe, at this time, was still recovering from Napoleon and the destruction his last “Waterloo” brought to the whole area. Food riots happened in the UK and France. Since Switzerland is landlocked, it got the worst of the famine. Huge storms, much rainfall, jamming the major rivers, notably the Rhine flooding and freezing happened, and then a big frost in August of 1816 added to the calamities. And don’t think it was over because of the “Year Without A Summer”. Precipitating famine, disease, lack and hardship caused a typhus epidemic between 1816 and 1819. Probably over 200,000 people perished during this period; (Ireland and Switzerland being the most impacted with population mortality).

Lack of Oats Might Have Spawned Invention

Under the category: “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”, the velocipede, the ancestor of the modern bicycle was invented right after this time. Karl Drais was the man. The lack of oats caused by the famine at that time, to feed horses, may have inspired him. Modern personal transportation is all dependent upon oats. (Foreshadowing a dependency on oil). This obvious relationship might have caused a realization, and thus an inventive spark and “flash of genius”, as inventions are spawned in similar kinds of situations.

Brown Snow, Red Snow, and “Frankensteinian” Weather

The eruption of Tambora also caused the Hungarian region to experience brown snow during the summer. Not too far away, Italy got something akin to brown snow. Red snow, throughout the year, was said to have fallen there. Of course the accumulation of five volcanoes in the recent past is believed to have been the cause for the “ash-colored” snow.

Partying in Rainy Stormy Switzerland Forces Literary Friends to a Writing Contest

When you plan a trip to Switzerland in the Summer, you are envisioning bright sunshine, yellow and pink blossoms adorning the hillsides and low humidity air to fill your lungs. However, in July of 1816 Mary Shelley, Lord Byron, John William Polidori and friends were forced to stay inside and stare through the windows at soggy, cold, unfriendly Switzerland. It drove them a bit batty. Amidst boozy boredom, they came up with the idea of a writing contest. Byron came up with a poem: “Darkness”. Polidori, “The Vampyre”; and Shelley a story about a “Modern Prometheus”, who would be fashioned by the now famous fictional “Dr. Frankenstein”. Though it was finished and published in 1818, it was spawned at that place, during the “Year Without A Summer”.

Frankenstein, Now a Horror Movie, Then a Feminist and Anti-Scientific Tome

Mary took the opportunity to make several profound points in her tale. She made arguments concerning science and its abuses and many undertones and symbols that had to do with feminism. Shelley’s mother, Mary Wollenstonecraft was the author of a well-known feminist text and undoubtedly influenced her daughter.

Mary Wollenstonecraft Godwin married Percy Bysshe Shelley, a poet and member of an established English family. He died relatively soon after they married in Italy. Her life was filled with struggle, but she wrote and wrote, and established herself after that strange summer in Switzerland, where her writing fame was born. Mary wrote a novel, which ended up being her best-knowm after “Frankenstein”. It was called “The Last Man”, written in 1826. She sets a story in the 21st Century, in which mankind is destroyed. It is described as an early form of science fiction; and still, some might say, could be strangely prophetic.

A Notable Dark Decade

The decade from 1811 to 1820 was heavily marked by real and powerful socioeconomic impacts. Malnutrition, poor agricultural production and spreading mild to severe regional and local epidemics had punishing effects on European and Mediterranean countries. With the end of the Napoleonic conflicts to boot, this was a very difficult decade, especially in Europe. The very low and freezing states experienced most extremely in 1816 and 1817 affected crop growth quite dramatically and thus reduced the general state of economic health, throughout European countries, greatly at that time. With post war economic collapse and historic cold and famine, it was a dark and poverty-filled decade.

Ironically Dickens and Marx Born During This Time

Both of these men were born during this decade. One in England, the other in Germany. Charles Dickens, the English Author, wrote about heroic struggle with poverty. He has been immortalized by “The Christmas Carol”, “Oliver Twist” and “Great Expectations”. Karl Marx came up with an entire political philosophy for dealing with poverty. He wrote “A Manifesto of The Communist Party” along with Engels. His ideas and work can be said to have affected millions of people in the early 20th century and today.

Both of these men grew up in poverty and carried on their adult lives constantly and profoundly addressing the social and political and personal effects of poverty. While Tambora and the time of Volcanoes and the Dalton Minimum can not be said to directly affect these two gentlemen, inasmuch as multiple societal, political and industrial factors were all at play at this time, there is still a strong symbolic case of irony that can make one infer that this “Volcano Time”, Tambora, the Dalton Minimum and the “Year Without A Summer” still affect us today.

Religion “binds over”. It’s purpose is actually anti thetical to the goals of spirituality. People don’t understand that. Yeast Itch Relief – 4 Easy Tips To Put Out The Raging Volcano In Your Pants!

]]>

One of the hallmarks of a yeast infection is the near nonstop painful itching that can just about drive you nuts.  If you’re tired of this nonsense, here are 4 steps to quickly kick that itch to the curb.

Go Commando

Yeast cannot survive in a climate that is dry and well ventilated.  So, keep the air flowing through your nether regions – and one of the best ways of doing that is by not ant wearing underwear at all, when possible.

Chickweed Ointment

This is the first thing you should reach for in yeast itch relief.  This ointment won’t kill the yeast causing your itchy infection, but nothing works any better for providing relief.  Apply this about 2 to 3 times a day for best results.

No More Sugar, Honey

Yeast feeds on sugar, so you’ll need to get rid of it in all its forms.  Quit eating candy, deserts, fruits, and all refined and processed foods.

Yogurt Popsicles

This method works great for your painful itching.  Just fill a popsicle tray with yogurt and freeze it for a couple of hours.  After that, take the popsicles out and insert directly into the vagina.  In addition to the relief from itching, the beneficial bacteria contained in the yogurt kill the yeast on contact and reduce the swelling.

Aloe Vera Gel

Aloe Vera gel works great for any kind of itching or burning.  Just make sure you use a brand that is at least 99% pure and free of chemicals.  Apply this 2 to 3 times a day and you’ll experience significant relief.

Lanzarote holidays – sun, sea, and volcanoes

Posted: Dec 22, 2009 |

]]>

The volcanic island Lanzarote makes the northernmost part of the Canary Islands. It has nearly 300 volcanic peaks, of which most are extinct. Many of these peaks feature on volcanic tours for visitors to the island. The island’s lunar landscape contrasts strikingly with rich fauna and flora, which are unique to Lanzarote.

In addition to its beautiful landscape, the island offers those who want to take a Lanzarote holiday golden beaches with crystalline water, modern and comfortable holiday resorts, and an excellent climate. Even in winter, daytime temperatures are in the range of 21oC or 70oF.

Tourists who take Lanzarote holidays can also expect hotels of very good quality, ranging from 2 to 5 star establishments. Other attractions include Teguise, the old capital, the El Grifo Wine Museum and the Santa Bara Castle. The Timanfaya National Park contains amazing volcanic landscape. Tourists can enjoy excursions such as the Sunday market in Teguise, the Cueva de los Verdes, which contains 3 miles of volcanic caves, and trips to Fire Mountain by camel.

An interesting feature of Lanzarote is that its natural landscape is mostly unspoiled by high-rise buildings. With the exception of one hotel in Arrecife, no building on the island is higher than a Canary Palm. This is mostly thanks to the environmentalist, sculptor, painter and architect, César Manrique.

The amazing symbiotic relationship between the natural, the modern, and the traditional, Lanzarote holidays offer the Canary Island visitor something for every taste. Whether you travel as individual, couple, or family, your visit to Lanzarote will be something to remember for a long time to come.

Madurai is one of the oldest cities of India, with a history dating all the way back to the Sangam period of the pre Christian era. The glory of Madurai returned in a diminished form in the earlier part of this millennium; it later on came under the rule of the Vijayanagar kingdom after it’s ransack by the ravaging armies of Delhi (Malik Kafur). During the 16th and 18th centuries, Madurai was ruled by the Nayak Emperors, the foremost of whom was Tirumalai Nayakar.

A Trip to Munnar

Munnar is a typical hill station, and was the summer resort of the British. Tourists come here to see the vast tea plantations of the area. The town itself is typically Indian with the usual shops, guest houses and is really beautiful and traditional. It is a good place to stay to see the surrounding countryside. It is also a popular place for Indian honeymooners. Munnar is 1,600 m (5,400 ft) above sea level. It is pronounced “Moon-aar” short for “moonu aar” meaning 3 rivers.
